about the UAE

  • middle-east-img (1)

the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is situated in Southwest Asia, bordering the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, with Oman to its east and Saudi Arabia to its west. The country is a federation of the seven states, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al Qaiwain, which formed in 1971 after gaining independence from Britain. Originally a fishing and pearling industry, it is now one of the Middle East’s most important economic hubs. In 1962 Abu Dhabi was the first of the emirates to begin exporting oil, which transformed the economy and attracted many foreign workers into the country, who currently make up more than three quarters of the population. However, the authorities were cautious not to allow the economy to become dependent on oil, and so diversified the economy, redirecting oil revenues into healthcare, education and infrastructure, which has led to the country becoming an important centre for business, tourism and construction.Although the UAE is one of the most liberal countries in the Gulf, the government is still authoritarian, only gaining elective bodies in December of 2006, which still only play a consultative role.

    • Shopping

    Shopping

The UAE are famous for their shopping. Alongside the traditional souqs are many plush malls offering wide-ranging, state-of-the-art facilities. There are some more ‘western’ oriented supermarkets, such as ‘Spinneys’ and ‘Choithram’s’, where pork (in a separate section to the other meat) and some European goods can be purchased.

    • WorkVisa

    Work/Residence Visas

To obtain a residence visa, the applicant needs a sponsor, i.e their employer to apply for it on their behalf. They are responsible for all of the paperwork and documentation, and are also responsible for the behaviour and actions of the foreign worker while they are in the country. It is easier for a man to obtain a visa, who can then apply for a family visa for the rest of his family. However, if the wife also wishes to work in the UAE she needs to apply for a separate visa. All members of the family should have a separate passport.
Usually visas last 1-3 years, but if the sponsor can prove that the foreign worker is still needed, they can easily renew the visa. The applicant’s passport will need at least 6 months left of validity, and at least 3 blank pages. If this is not the case, a new passport should be obtained before the visa is applied for. The applicant will also need to pass medical tests to prove that they are in good health, up to date with all vaccinations and free from sexually transmitted diseases. Fingerprints will also be taken to ensure security of the visa. Usually the costs of the visa are met by the employer.
Once obtained, the holder cannot spend more than 6 months out of the country, or the permit will expire. They also should leave the country and reapply for another permit if they decide to leave their original job.
